Liminal Space

Red dwarfs are the only stars in their prime,

Their trillion-year lifespans ticking away

Like clocks. Orange and Yellow dwarfs are on

Their last legs as they begin

blasting the last orange, yellow and white

Light from living stars. Galaxies have become

Sparse clouds of gas trails in faint arms.

Few galaxies can be seen in the skies of worlds,

Though mergers keep fueling stellar formation

As the few galactic groups merge into one final

Galaxy. These last gasps of bright blue light

Brings speckled light to my skin once more.

Shimmering for a while as my birthmarks

Begin to fade. More zits take form as black

Holes pierce through spacetime and fuse

Making bigger and bigger globs of pitch black.

A few civilizations remain around the stars,

Some around the living, others amongst the dead.

The bold ones live around the black holes,

Courting destruction with ever orbit only

To find themselves safe for one more pass.

Perhaps I should visit these civilizations

Before everything fades to darkness…
