The final stars have lost their fight
Gravity crushing them to their cores
Leaving nothing but burnt-out husks
That was the Universe’s new plight
Light was fading fast
Her magnificent colors blown away
Galaxies left skeletons painted rust red
Every once in a while, a faint flicker
Illuminates this ever-expanding dusk
When a black hole devours gas clouds
Or a stellar corpse wanders too close.
Yet these sparks and sputters will dim too
For even black holes may one day die,
Emitting the final, cataclysmic explosions
The universe will ever witness,
A final fluorescent flash before all
Colors drain from her skin
Veiled in twilight, then
There was
Darkness
