Embers

It starts as a hunger,

Deep-seated and ravenous,

A singular directive

Of machine-like rhythm

Pushing flesh-bound gears

To propel themselves for more

Aspiration cling within membranes

While currents carry hysterical drive

Why the frenetic pace?

The pushing, grinding, racing

When the work etched in blood

Fades in a lost breath or two

Monuments once deemed eternal

Nothing more than cracked pillars

Bio-machine gears grind to a halt

As embers fade to ash and dust
