Reunion

I woke up today in a state of confusion
Thoughts swirled like great whirlpools
A constant racket urging to be sung
Driven out by a churning tongue
I suppose it’s time for a reunion

A knock on the door rattles
Dissonant voices spoke outside it
Beckoning, calling, crying to be seen
To be put on the page
And become more than a dream
It takes heart to embrace a reunion

Years gone by float on the silence
A face familiar and somehow foreign
Raises a hand and waves to you
As if the somber silence could just be erased
It was always cold in that bed, wasn’t it?
Your face contorts a half-smile back
This is one of the hardest parts of a reunion

One thought drifts away on the wind
Carried to glistening sunshine and golden days
When the flame in your breast burned bright
Those were the days, weren’t they?
His glittering eyes lingering on your radiance
Pearly whites shimmering against caramel cheeks
Then, feet freeze to the floor when he looks at you
Why exactly did you invite this reunion?

A tiny hand squeezes your hand,
Staring in delight at the sight of this cold man
Then, the sun rises with all its majesty
Though not for your world. That ship sailed
Out from the harbor and broke upon the shore
That’s why we braved the storm!
The itty-bitty human, your legacy
While also inheriting his mossy eyes
Indeed, it was time for a reunion
